Several Cars Pass Safety Tests with Flying Colors

Honda, Subaru and Volvo fare the best in a new crash test done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

According to an article from CBS News, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s newest crash test shows which cars fare the best in accidents. The new test shows that Honda, Subaru, and Volvo did especially well in the crash test.

One of the tests done was a “front small overlap,” in which around a quarter or the vehicle front hits another car or an object (such as a tree or pole). SUVs did not do so well in the test and in fact, the Subaru Forester 2014 was the only model to receive the highest rating. The Outlander Sport from Mitsubishi received the second highest, “acceptable” rating. Thirteen different 2014 models were tested. The Ford Escape, BMW X1 and Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V all received marginal or poor ratings.

The IIHS decided to do this test because of research that showed that around 2,500 people were dying in crashes with front hits such as this.

In addition to the above test, the IIHS instituted the “Top Safety Pick +” rating, which means that a model must have a good rating in four of the institute’s five crash tests and no less than an “acceptable” rating in the fifth test. Honda and Subaru had three vehicles receive this rating, and Volvo received this rating for two of its vehicles.
