The American Society of Safety Engineers' Region VI chapters, along with a sister chapter in Kuwait, will host the 21st annual professional development conference, to be held Sept. 19-21 at Kingston Plantation Resorts in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The event will feature more than 20 concurrent sessions on topics such as nanotechnology safety, risk management, and pandemic flu preparedness and be highlighted each day by presentations from luminaries of the health and safety world.

Keynote speakers are Steven V. Cannizzaro, president of North Star Company; John Howard, M.D., M.P.H., J.D., LL.M, director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health; and Donald G. Shalhoub, Esq., deputy assistant secretary of labor for OSHA. Cannizzaro will discuss leadership and provide attendees with information and tools to help them become more effective leaders. Howard will speak about current challenges SH&E practitioners face, especially in relation to workforce demographics, including emerging hazards such as pandemic flu, nanotechnology, and biotechnology and will review science initiatives at NIOSH that impact SH&E professionals. Shalhoub will give an OSHA update that will include enforcement activities, outreach opportunities, and various OSHA workplace safety initiatives.

The event is a regionally coordinated educational and networking conference hosted by ASSE Region VI chapters located in Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virgina, Washington, D.C., and a sister chapter in Kuwait.
