Solis Will Speak at Safety 2009

The Labor secretary is scheduled to speak June 29 during a General Session of the annual conference at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio.

U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis is confirmed as a June 29 speaker at the American Society of Safety Engineers' Safety 2009 Professional Development Conference and Exposition in San Antonio. ASSE said yesterday that the secretary will deliver a General Session speech that morning in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. At that time, she will have been secretary for about four months.

Solis' appearance will be unusual; OSHA's leaders are regular presenters at the largest U.S. safety and health conferences, but the Labor secretary has a higher profile. Solis will have the opportunity to state her position on several pressing workplace safety questions, including the changes proposed in the Protecting America's Workers Act; who will be nominated (and when) to lead OSHA and MSHA on a permanent rather than acting basis; and how quickly the cranes and derricks standard and other pending standards can take effect.

"This is an honor to have Secretary Solis address our members at this time," ASSE President Warren K. Brown, CSP, ARM, CSHM, said Monday. "She is committed, like safety and health professionals, to making sure that everyone who goes to work is provided a safe and healthy workplace. Our members work day in and day out preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace worldwide."

The conference will take place June 28 through July 1.

OSHA Region 6 Administrator John Hermanson says the agency assessed the maximum statutory fines, a total of $21,500 for four alleged serious violations, against a small Oklahoma grain company in connection with amputation injuries suffered by two teenage workers. Does this case demonstrate the need to increase the amounts OSHA can issue in penalties?
