OSHA Renews “Star Level” Status of Metals Processing Facility

The status of Wieland Metal Services LLC is the highest level of recognition for health and safety.

A metals processing facility has been renamed a “star” site.

According to a press release, OSHA renewed the status of Wieland Metal Services LLC, of Warwick, Rhode Island, after an inspection earlier this year. Wieland Metal Services LLC was first recognized as a “star level” site in 2019. The company works to slit, traverse wind/weld and sheet various metals like copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel and alloys.

“The continued level of workplace safety and health practiced by recent participant Wieland Metal Services is commendable,” said OSHA Regional Administrator Galen Blanton in Boston in the press release. “Site leadership and employees work to continuously improve processes. Since their last reapproval they have especially focused on improvements to machine guarding and involving employees in development of material handling and ergonomics training for new hires.”

The recognition falls under OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program, which recognizes companies that have excellent health and safety systems, according to its website. The “star” status is the highest level of health and safety recognition in the program. Currently, there are 2,009 federal and state-plan sites in OSHA’s VPP.
