OSHA Urges Fireworks Safety this Fourth of July Weekend

Independence Day is approaching and employers must keep an eye out for their employees working in the industry this holiday.

Americans nationwide are celebrating Independence Day this weekend, and OSHA is reminding the pyrotechnics industry for employers to protect their workers from all hazards that come all along with the fireworks. According to a press release, these hazards include: the manufacturing process, storing, transporting, displaying and selling fireworks for use at public events.

“This industry’s hazards are well-known, but necessary precautions can prevent injuries or worse when working with these volatile devices,” said Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Jim Frederick. “Employers are responsible for taking preventive measures and making sure they train all workers properly in a language they understand.”

The pyrotechnics industry on OSHA’s webpage discusses firework sales and displays. The page provides information on common hazards and solutions found in both areas of the industry. There is also a training video provided that demonstrates the best industry practices for retail sales and manufacturers based on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) consensus standards.
