A growing majority of skilled trade professionals are adopting artificial intelligence and automation tools to handle increasing workloads driven by workforce shortages and new technology demands.
According to a survey of more than 300 trade professionals conducted at National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)’s annual Conference & Expo in June, 88% of respondents reported an increase in demand for their work over the past three years. Additionally, 36% noted a rise in demand specifically tied to AI infrastructure, such as data centers and electrical power upgrades.
To manage the heightened workload, trade workers are turning to digital solutions. 87% of respondents said technology has made their jobs easier over the past five years. When asked which technologies had the most significant effect on their daily tasks, 39% pointed to AI and automation tools, while 36% cited digital platforms and software.
Rapid technological adoption has also heightened the need for ongoing education. 94% of surveyed professionals participate in at least one training or professional development program per year, with 37% taking part in training sessions on a monthly basis.
Beyond technology, trade workers emphasized the importance of industry networking and education. 65% of respondents identified collaboration with peers as the top benefit of professional membership, followed by continuing education opportunities at 57% and technical support on industry codes and standards at 38%.
