Construction Industry Prepares for National Suicide Prevention Stand Down
Employers and safety professionals across the nation will pause work on Sept 14 to raise awareness for mental health in construction.

Job sites across the nation will observe a one-minute moment of silence at 11:50 a.m. Pacific time Sept. 14 as part of Construction Suicide Prevention Week.
The national stand-down aims to honor construction workers lost to suicide while reinforcing mental health awareness as an essential component of workplace safety. Construction consistently ranks among the U.S. industries with the highest suicide rates, prompting safety agencies, employers, unions and health professionals to coordinate targeted outreach.
Industry experts emphasize that mental health support forms a critical line of defense in occupational health. Throughout the week of Sept. 14–18, construction leaders are encouraged to discuss mental health during daily safety meetings, distribute crisis support materials and review Employee Assistance Programs with staff.
Organizations participating in the initiative can access toolbox talks, crisis response guides and workplace consultation services designed to help supervisors identify signs of distress. Support remains available 24/7 through the national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which offers free, confidential assistance in multiple languages.
