"Safety doesn't have to do operations, so why should we have to do safety?" Every EHS professional has heard some version of it. It is the quiet consensus that has hollowed out the profession: only safety does safety, and everyone else gets to opt in. Meanwhile, operations runs entire shifts of people to move the work while a team of one, two, or five is expected to own hazard identification, training, investigations, recordkeeping, and culture for the whole site.
