Horse Meat Found in UK Burger King Whoppers

After denying claims that its hamburgers contained trace amounts of horse meat, Burger King has admitted that a supplier provided meat contaminated with horse.

Giving a whole new meaning to the term “mystery meat,” UK locations of the fast food chain Burger King have admitted to selling burgers containing horse meat. Burger King, with more than 500 restaurants in the UK, denied use of any meat in its burgers other than beef for the past two weeks since the allegations first arose.

Approximately one million burgers are sold at Burger Kings in the UK every week and some of these come from an Irish-based food processing company Silvercrest, which has been under investigation for including unapproved ingredients in its food.

Horse meat was one of these ingredients, coming from Poland. This practice may have been going on for a long as a year, according to some of the findings of the investigation.

After samples were taken of the meat, trace amounts of horse meat were found in four of the samples. Burger King claims that the company has no knowledge that Silvercrest was getting meat from unapproved suppliers.

Burgers from Silvercrest have been recalled from all Burger King locations and stores where the meat was also distributed.
