Ike-Spawned Flooding Closes ASSE's Home Office

Hurricane Ike has caused untold misery in Houston and surrounding cities, with widespread power outages continuing today and gasoline, food, and ice desperately needed by residents. Search teams continue to go through damaged homes on Galveston Island; its power may not be restored for more than a week, according to Houston-area news reports.

Some other victims of the hurricane are hundreds of miles away. The Chicago northwest suburb of Des Plaines is experiencing floods because of rains from Ike as the tropical storm passed through, and several roads through the ctiy are closed today.

The home office of the American Society of Safety Engineers is not open today because of flooding, according to a notice posted at www.asse.org.
