New Software Helps Emergency Responders See Possible Paths of Hazardous Releases

SAFER Response pairs Emergency Response Guidebook guidance with rapid plume modeling and internet weather data and can draw field data from its maker's area and personal monitors.

Hazmat teams, fire departments and emergency management agencies are the intended users of SAFER Response, a decision support platform for hazardous materials incidents that gas detection company Industrial Scientific unveiled Oct. 28.

Within a single platform, SAFER Response combines Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) information, impact visualization, internet-sourced weather data and rapid plume modeling. Teams can create an incident, view a release's possible path and draw on ERG guidance when making response decisions. Viewing the hazard alongside the guidance helps teams gauge where people could face risk and identify isolation distances and protective actions, the company said.

Field data can feed into SAFER Response from the company's Ventis Pro5 personal monitors and Radius BZ1 area monitors. Organizations can also add other weather integration options as their needs change.

Away from live incidents, the software can be used for training exercises and drills so teams can practice sizing up changing hazards before an emergency. More information about SAFER Response is available online.
