Businesses selecting emergency exit signs should consider building layouts, occupancy levels, evacuation routes and applicable safety requirements, according to guidance from Foshan Kaili Lighting Technology Co., Ltd., an emergency lighting manufacturer based in China.
The guidance references OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.37 and NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code, which address exit routes and emergency egress. Exit signs should remain visible under normal conditions and during power outages.
Employers should evaluate evacuation routes to ensure signs are clearly positioned and workers can locate exits without assistance. Testing visibility during simulated power failures can help identify potential problems.
Exit signs and emergency lighting should meet applicable safety standards, including UL 924 where required. Photoluminescent signs require adequate light exposure to remain visible during outages, while battery-backed systems need regular inspection and testing.
Proper signage must also be supported by unobstructed exit routes, employee evacuation training and routine maintenance. Employers should consult local authorities or qualified safety professionals to verify compliance with applicable requirements.
