Updated Head Protection Standard Adds Type I+ and Type II+ Designations

The 2026 revision expands optional testing for retention, chin straps and multidirectional impacts without replacing current classifications.

New criteria in ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2026 give employers additional ways to evaluate head protection based on workplace hazards.

The International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) released the updated American National Standard for Industrial Head Protection following its approval by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The revision retains the established Type I and Type II classifications and does not make existing compliant equipment obsolete.

New Type I+ and Type II+ designations identify products tested beyond the standard’s base requirements. Both include additional testing for chin strap performance and helmet retention. Type I+ also expands impact testing to the front, back and sides of the head.

ISEA said employers should continue selecting head protection based on job-specific hazards because the enhanced classifications will not be necessary in every workplace.

The Z89.1 standard is referenced in OSHA regulations, but the optional additions do not themselves change employers’ regulatory obligations. ISEA will explain the revision during a Sept. 30 webinar beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
