NSC Predicts Hundreds of Memorial Day Traffic Fatalities

A national safety organization warns that holiday travelers face an elevated risk of fatal motor vehicle crashes during the upcoming holiday weekend.

A national safety group warned that holiday travelers face an elevated risk of fatal motor vehicle crashes over the Memorial Day weekend.

The National Safety Council estimated 393 people could die in traffic accidents during the holiday period, which it defines as 6 p.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. Monday.

The council’s analysis said alcohol-impaired driving accounted for 38% of fatal crashes during the 2024 Memorial Day holiday, compared with a 30% share for the 2024 calendar year. The group also noted that impairment from other substances, including cannabis and some prescription medications, can affect driver reaction times and vehicle operation.

The council urged drivers to avoid distractions, obey posted speed limits and not drive while impaired. It also recommended basic vehicle checks before long trips and said about 57 million vehicles have unresolved safety recalls. The council said an additional 96 lives could be saved over the holiday period if all vehicle occupants wore seat belts.

The group also reminded drivers to check the backseat before locking vehicles to help prevent child and pet vehicular heatstroke.
