Safety Fault Found in Bus that Killed Cyclist in San Francisco

New information shows that the bus lacked a feature designed to prevent entrapment of cyclists

Due to an accident that occurred last week involving a 78-year-old cyclist being killed by a bus, an investigation reveals the bus did not have a safety device installed that is designed to prevent accidents of that sort, according to San Francisco Gate.

The bus was supposed to have the S-1 Gard, otherwise known as a “people catcher,” installed in front of its rear tires, which can prevent fatalities from entrapment. The plastic device pushes people who fall under the bus out of the path of the wheels, according to the article.

The bus in question was Number 8410 on the 27-Bryant line in San Francisco. A spokesman from the transit agency said that the S-1 Gard isn’t an industry-mandated requirement, but rather something that San Francisco buses are outfitted with. They also stated that they regularly replace missing S-1 Gards and all buses were outfitted with them in 2007 and 2008.
