North Carolina Mine Workers Record Zero Fatalities Over Fiscal Year

State mining and quarrying operations achieved zero fatalities and below-average injury rates for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.

State mine and quarry operations reached a major safety milestone by recording no worker fatalities during the 2025-2026 state fiscal year.

The state’s nonfatal injury rate for the sector also fell below national figures. North Carolina reported 1.33 injuries per 200,000 employee-hours worked, compared with the U.S. average of 1.62 during the same time frame.

Safety initiatives across the state’s 243 active or intermittent mine sites are backed by the North Carolina Department of Labor’s Mine and Quarry Bureau.

The bureau works with site operators and contractors to deliver hands-on training, technical guidance, workplace consultations and emergency CPR instruction aimed at lowering risk and enforcing compliance with safety regulations.
