Turning 60, Sparky Gaining Voice from Contest
The National Fire Protection Association is looking for a firefighter or someone who works for a fire department "to be the voice behind this iconic mascot we all know and love!" Videos must be submitted by Feb. 16.
The National Fire Protection Association is staging a contest to find the perfect voice for Sparky the Fire Dog®, a mascot turning 60 this year. The winner, a firefighter or fire department employee, will win a Sparky costume, a trip to Boston to record for the NFPA Fire Prevention Week video, and "the best public education materials around so that you can continue teaching children, their parents and educators on fire prevention and public safety," according to NFPA.
Video entries are due by Feb. 16. NFPA will choose three finalists; on Feb. 21, fans, family, and fellow firefighters can vote for the winner. Voting will close Feb. 28, and the "Voice of Sparky" will be announced March 1.
Career firefighters, volunteer firefighters, and other fire department employees can submit videos of themselves giving their best Sparky impersonation. The recording will take place between March 1 and March 19. The official Sparky costume is valued at $1,500. NFPA said the contest winner will serve a term of March 1, 2011, to Dec. 31, 2011, and may be asked to participate in media interviews or promotions during that timeframe.
