IBEW Photo Finalists Show Beauty of Electrical Work
Members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers are especially busy in winter months, restoring power lines downed by ice storms and blizzards. Their AFL-CIO-affiliated union has survived an amazing number of changes since its founding in 1891, and while this history is not apparent in the 15 finalist photos in the union's 2008 Photo Contest, the beauty in which IBEW members sometimes work is there.
The union's members are voting now for their favorites at this site. The contest attracted about 100 entries, and voters are asked to pick their top three in online voting that will end Dec. 31. You can click on the photos for an enlarged image and description, including the photographer’s name. (The photo of St. Louis Local 2 member Ron Shepherd's repair work on a line after an ice storm is worth a visit.)
The union will announce the winners early in 2009 and will feature the winning photos and honorable mentions in an upcoming issue of the IBEW Journal. To contact the union's Safety & Health Department and its director, Jim Tomaseski, visit this site.
