Suicide Prevention Group Thanks Rail Industry for Efforts

The Suicide Prevention Action Network USA recently gave an "Allies for Action" award to the Association of American Railroads and its members at a Capitol Hill ceremony for their work on suicide prevention.

"The single largest cause of fatalities on the railroads is trespassing on railroad property, and many of those trespassers are, tragically, attempting suicide,'” Edward R. Hamberger, AAR's president and CEO, said in a March 5 news release. "By partnering with organizations such as SPAN, a leader in the area of suicide prevention, we hope to be able to significantly reduce the number of fatalities on railroad tracks."

AAN said other award recipients include U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell, D-Iowa, and Forest Pharmaceuticals, Inc. AAR also said it accepted the award on behalf of its members, Amtrak, Anacostia and Pacific, BNSF Railway, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, CSX, Genesee and Wyoming, Iowa Interstate, Kansas City Southern, Metra, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, Vermont Railway, and Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway.
