Hauler Safety Awareness Celebration Set for June 13

Covanta's Fairfax, Va., facility will host a National Hauler Safety Day with a celebration and ceremony on June 13. Covanta Energy operates 31 energy from waste facilities in the United States, and the Fairfax facility is the largest facility in the Covanta group, the company said yesterday.

The Integrated Waste Services Association formed a national alliance with OSHA in October 2005 and selected hauler safety as one of its goals. "We have developed communication materials, posters, stickers and have consolidated the minimum '12 Rules' we ask all haulers to follow when disposing of the municipal solid waste on our tipping floors," the company's announcement says. All 88 IWSA member companies support the initiative, and most will host a hauler safety event in June. "We hope to make June the Nationwide Hauler Safety Month, when annually, we can recognize this important workforce who does so much to improve the quality of our streets and neighborhoods through effective waste management, and yet who rarely receive recognition for their work," Covanta's announcement said.

The company said IWSA's safety committee members have been working with Lee Anne Jillings, director of the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Outreach Services, and Alliances. For information about the alliance, visit www.osha.gov/dcsp/alliances/iwsa/iwsa.html.
