Cal/OSHA Updates General Industry Workplace Violence Draft for Third Time This Year

The proposed standard, which would be a new section 3343 of title 8, traces back on Cal/OSHA's page to a 2017 advisory meeting on a petition granted by California's Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board.

A September discussion draft of California's proposed workplace violence prevention standard for general industry is now available with the materials for an Oct. 27 advisory committee meeting in Oakland. The in-person-only session was set to discuss the updated text. Cal/OSHA also posted the agenda, invitation and committee roster.

Two earlier versions drew written comments this year. Cal/OSHA issued a revised draft April 23, after reviewing input from a Nov. 12, 2025, advisory meeting, and set a June 1 comment deadline. A second revision came out July 22, following a review of the feedback, with a deadline of Aug. 17.

Cal/OSHA held its first advisory meeting on the topic in January 2017, prompted by Petition 542, which the Standards Board granted. A January 2025 meeting considered how the discussion draft at that time changed Labor Code section 6401.9, which Senate Bill 553 established.
