Michigan Offers Matching Grants for Workplace Safety Equipment

MIOSHA funding provides up to $5000 for eligible employers with no more than 250 employees companywide.

Small employers in Michigan can apply for matching grants of up to $5,000 to purchase workplace safety equipment and associated training through the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The agency’s Workplace Improvement to Safety and Health program, known as MIWISH, matches employer spending dollar for dollar. Applicants must have no more than 250 employees across the company and be covered by MIOSHA’s jurisdiction.

Funding priority goes to employers in industries designated as high hazard in the agency’s strategic plan and projects addressing state or national emphasis program priorities. Those priorities include amputation prevention, heat illness and hazards associated with trenching and excavation.

Applicants must evaluate conditions at the worksite to justify the proposed purchase and explain how the project would reduce injury or illness risks. They also must have the expertise and resources to carry out the project and put it into use.

MIOSHA distributed $500,000 among 129 employers during fiscal year 2025-26. Construction employers accounted for the largest portion of recipients.

Previous purchases included helmets, gloves, protective eyewear, high-visibility clothing and harnesses for fall protection.

The current funding cycle opened Oct. 1. Awards will continue until the available money has been allocated.
