A Clearer Vision for Eye and Face Protection

The revised ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2025 standard aims to make eye and face protection easier to select, understand, and implement while reinforcing the role of hazard assessment in preventing workplace injuries.

Every day across the United States, thousands of workers step onto job sites, factory floors, and into laboratories where eye and face hazards are part of the environment. Despite decades of progress in workplace safety, the reality remains stark: approximately 20,000 occupational eye injuries each year are serious enough to require medical attention. These incidents carry a heavy toll—not only in human impact, but also in economic cost, with an estimated $300 million annually in workers’ compensation, medical expenses, and lost productivity.

What makes this even more concerning and frustrating is that the vast majority of these injuries are preventable. With proper protective equipment and consistent use, up to 90 percent of eye injuries could be avoided. That statistic underscores both the opportunity and the responsibility facing safety professionals today.

It is in this context that the International Safety Equipment Association has released the updated ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2025, a critical advancement in the ongoing effort to protect workers from preventable harm. This latest revision reflects not only technical improvements but also a broader commitment to making eye and face protection more effective, accessible, and easier to implement across industries.

At its core, ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 has always been a performance-based standard. Rather than prescribing one-size-fits-all solutions, it establishes rigorous criteria for how protective devices must perform under specific hazard conditions. The 2025 update builds on that legacy while addressing a key challenge faced by employers and safety professionals: selecting the right protection for the right hazard.

What’s New?

One of the most significant enhancements in the updated standard is the introduction of clearer, more standardized product markings. In the past, interpreting markings on safety eyewear could be confusing, particularly for workers who are not deeply familiar with technical specifications. The revised marking system is designed to communicate hazard protection more intuitively, helping users quickly identify whether a product is appropriate for risks such as impact, splash, or radiation exposure. This improvement may seem incremental, but in practice, it can mean the difference between proper protection and preventable injury.

The standard also includes updated performance language related to impact testing, optical clarity, and minimum coverage requirements. These refinements ensure that protective devices not only meet high safety thresholds but also provide the comfort and visibility necessary for sustained use. After all, even the most advanced protective equipment is ineffective if workers are reluctant to wear it.

Another important aspect of the 2025 revision is its stronger alignment with complementary standards, including ANSI/ISEA Z97.62-2021, which addresses protection against blood and other potentially infectious fluids. This alignment is particularly relevant in healthcare, emergency response, and other environments where biological hazards are present alongside traditional physical risks. By harmonizing requirements across standards, ISEA and its partners are helping to reduce confusion and improve consistency in protective strategies.

The goal of this revision was not to reinvent the standard, but to make it more practical and user-friendly, such as making the requirements easier to navigate and apply in real-world settings.

What’s Not?

However, even the most well-crafted standard cannot achieve its full impact without proper implementation. ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2025 reinforces a fundamental principle of occupational safety: hazard assessment is essential. Employers must carefully evaluate workplace conditions to determine the appropriate level of protection. This includes considering factors such as flying debris, chemical exposure, optical radiation, and environmental conditions like fogging or low visibility.

The standard also retains the flexibility introduced in previous editions, including provisions for relaxed optics and anti-fog performance. These features are particularly valuable in specialized environments such as military operations and emergency response, where traditional optical requirements may need to be balanced against operational demands. By maintaining these options, the standard acknowledges the diverse needs of today’s workforce.

Eye Protection On AND Off the Job

Beyond the workplace, there is another dimension to eye safety that deserves attention.  Safety habits do not—and should not—stop at the job site. Nearly half of all eye injuries occur in the home, often during activities that mirror workplace hazards: using power tools, handling chemicals, or operating lawn equipment.

Workers who consistently wear eye protection on the job are uniquely positioned to influence behavior outside of it. When they bring those habits home and model safe practices for family members and neighbors, they contribute to a broader culture of safety. This “ripple effect” has the potential to significantly reduce injuries not only in workplaces, but in communities as well.

Partners in Safety

The development of ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2025 reflects a collaborative effort across the safety ecosystem. The standard was created through a consensus process led by the American National Standards Institute-accredited Z87 Committee, bringing together manufacturers, testing laboratories, safety professionals, and government representatives. This inclusive approach ensures that the standard is both technically sound and practically relevant.

For employers and safety leaders, the release of this updated standard presents an important opportunity. Now is the time to review existing eye and face protection programs, assess whether current equipment meets the latest requirements, and ensure that workers are properly trained in selection and use. It is also an opportunity to re-engage employees in conversations about safety—reinforcing the message that eye protection is not optional, but essential.

Ultimately, standards like ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2025 are about more than compliance. They are about protecting people, their vision, their health, and their ability to work and live safely. With clearer guidance, improved usability, and continued emphasis on performance, this latest revision provides a strong foundation for reducing preventable injuries and advancing occupational safety in the years ahead.

The tools to prevent most eye injuries already exist. The challenge—and the opportunity—is to use them effectively.
