State Health Agency Alerts Employers to Escalating Countertop Dust Hazards

Washington officials urge countertop fabricators to replace engineered stone or implement strict dust controls to prevent fatal lung disease.

Labor officials are warning employers and workers in the countertop fabrication industry about severe risks of fatal lung disease associated with cutting and processing artificial stone.

The Department of Labor & Industries released a hazard alert outlining preventative measures to eliminate respirable crystalline silica exposure among manufacturing, finishing and installation crews. Engineered stone products contain high concentrations of silica, which produces fine airborne particles when ground or polished. Inhaled dust bypasses natural respiratory defenses, leading to rapid lung scarring and silicosis, an incurable condition.

State health authorities recommend replacing artificial stone with materials containing lower silica levels, such as porcelain, wood, cement or natural stone, as the primary defense against exposure.

For facilities using engineered stone, officials recommend implementing engineering controls, including wet-cutting methods and continuous negative-pressure ventilation enclosures. Recommended administrative measures include strict daily cleaning routines without dry sweeping, clear warning signage and comprehensive safety training regarding rapid disease onset.

Personal protective equipment recommendations for artificial stone fabrication call for tight-fitting powered air-purifying respirators or continuous-flow air-line systems offering an assigned protection factor of 1,000, combined with high-efficiency particulate filtration cartridges and disposable coveralls. Standard half-face elastomeric and N95 masks provide minimal protection against high dust concentrations generated during fabrication tasks.

Employees with current or past exposure to artificial stone dust can file workers' compensation claims to obtain medical evaluations without out-of-pocket costs or personal insurance deductibles. Employers are required to provide medical surveillance at no charge for workers exposed above the action level of 25 micrograms per cubic meter of air over an eight-hour shift.

Healthcare providers and members of the public can report identified cases of silicosis to the state's Safety and Health Assessment and Research for Prevention program to assist with ongoing workplace tracking.
