Coal Miner Dies After Being Pinned by Machinery

A coal miner operating a continuous mining machine died after becoming pinned between the equipment and a coal rib during an underground mining operation.
The incident highlights ongoing safety hazards involving heavy remote-controlled machinery working in restricted underground spaces. Federal regulators emphasize that keeping personnel out of designated danger zones remains critical to preventing fatal crushing injuries.
Industry safety guidelines recommend that equipment operators maintain a safe distance from active continuous mining machines at all times. Operators are advised to stay clear of "Red Zone" areas, which include pinch points, machine turning radiuses and tight spaces between equipment and mine walls.
Mine operators are encouraged to establish clear procedures for tramming, repositioning and handling cables while moving remote-controlled machinery. Safety officials also stress the proper maintenance and testing of Proximity Detection Systems, which alert workers or disable machinery when individuals enter dangerous zones. Operators must ensure wearable detection components are functioning correctly and worn according to manufacturer guidelines.
