Miner Fatally Pinned During Equipment Transport

A collision between two scoops in an underground mine resulted in a shifting longwall shield that fatally crushed a worker.

Federal investigators are examining a fatal accident involving heavy machinery at an underground mining site.

The incident occurred on April 3, 2026, when a scoop traveling in reverse struck another scoop transporting a longwall shield. The impact caused the shield to shift. A miner working underneath sustained fatal injuries after being pinned.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration released these safety recommendations:

  • Keep work areas clear and position miners away from potential hazards, including pinch points, when moving or positioning equipment.
  • Train all miners on hazards of moving shields.
  • Securely block equipment against motion.
  • Provide adequate illumination for maintenance work.
  • Wear reflective clothing for visibility around mobile equipment.
  • Communicate presence and intended movements near mobile equipment, and wait for acknowledgment before proceeding.

MSHA is investigating the collision to assess circumstances and potential training needs for crews handling longwall components.
