Winners of a statewide media contest designed to bolster safety awareness among young workers will be announced during a livestream event at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
The 2026 competition, hosted by the Oregon Young Employee Safety (O[yes]) Coalition, tasked high school students with developing graphic designs or short videos. The entries aimed to encourage peers to complete the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division’s online course regarding heat-illness prevention.
According to contest organizers, the initiative seeks to provide teen workers with the tools necessary to recognize and avoid heat-related hazards, particularly during summer employment. Students were responsible for developing their own themes and taglines to reach an audience of first-time workers and teenagers.
Top performers in both the graphic design and video categories will receive cash prizes ranging from $300 to $500. Additionally, the first-place winners’ schools or organizations will receive matching cash awards.
The coalition plans to utilize the winning submissions in future public service campaigns to improve workplace protections for young employees. The public can watch the livestream event online to see the winning entries.
Sponsors for the event include the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences, Oregon OSHA and the SAIF Corporation, along with several regional safety and construction associations.
