Pfizer Announces Coronavirus Vaccine Data Shows 90% Success Rate

In the midst of a surge in coronavirus cases, Pfizer announced that the COVID-19 vaccine it has been working on appears to be 90% effective.

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc. revealed on November 9 that the COVID-19 vaccine it is developing may be 90% effective, according to the Associated Press.

This estimation is based on incomplete test results of a study of 44,000 people, where 94 of them were infected. Some participants in the study were given the vaccine and others were given a placebo—it is assumed that most of the infections occurred in those who received the placebo.

“We’re in a position potentially to be able to offer some hope,” said Dr. Bill Gruber, Pfizer’s senior vice president of clinical development.

Pfizer is developing the vaccine in partnership with the German company BioNTech. Pfizer will be applying for emergency-use approval from the FDA later this month.
