NIOSH Debuts Workplace Sound App

The app is available for iOS devices

NIOSH has released the Sound Lever Meter mobile app, intended to measure sound levels in the workplace and help raise awareness about noise exposure and occupation noise-induced hearing loss. The app is available on iOS devices and is free to download. It is intended for industrial hygienists, occupational health and safety managers, and workers who don’t have access to professional equipment.

A NISOH study determined most apps lack the accuracy and functionality needed to conduct occupational noise measurements. The agency then collaborated with EA LAB to develop an appropriate app.

“While the app is not meant to replace a professional sound level meter or a noise dosimeter or be used for compliance purposes, we recommend that those interested in making proper noise measurements use an external microphone that can be calibrated with an acoustical calibrator for improved accuracy,” NIOSH’s blog post reads.

NIOSH hopes the app will eventually become a research tool.
