NSC's CEO Praises Federal Automated Vehicle Policy

Deborah Hersman says the policy gives carmakers the green light to innovate and keep safety at the forefront.

National Safety Council President and CEO Deborah Hersman released a statement regarding the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's new Federal Automated Vehicle Policy, saying it "gives carmakers and states the green light to innovate while keep safety at the forefront."

Her statement said that after 19,000 fatalities in the first six months of 2016, more must be done to keep the public safe. Hersman is a former NTSB chair, and traffic safety and ending impaired driving are priorities for the council.

"Until cars are truly autonomous with 100 percent reliability, we are still our cars' best safety feature. Today, NHTSA has provided a much-needed path forward; we hope innovative manufacturers will embrace the Administration's guidelines as a blueprint for saving lives and preventing injuries," Hersman said in the statement.
