Miami-Dade Fire Rescue ALS Team Triumphs
They took first place July 8 at the 2011 Bill Shearer International ALS/BLS Competition.
The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue department's Advanced Life Support Team finished first at the 2011 Bill Shearer International ALS/BLS Competition, which was held July 8 as a part of the ClinCon 2011 Conference in Orlando, Fla. This year's scenario featured mass casualty incidents, critical airway emergencies, toxic syndromes, trauma, and pediatric emergencies.
It is considered the "Super Bowl" of ALS competitions. More than 40 teams from across the country competed.
The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue ALS team members who competed were Capt. Eddy Trapero, Firefighter Bernardo Bernardo, Firefighter Robert Cardenas, and Firefighter Michael Ung. This was their second championship in the past three years in this competition, according to the department's July 14 news release.
"Teams train for months to prepare for this competition. Our team excelled in every scenario we were given, showing that MDFR is prepared to handle any type of real-world emergency," said Emergency Medical Services Division Chief John Gardner. "This competition presented the ALS team with an extremely challenging scenario."
