NIOSH has scheduled a Dec. 9 public meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa., to discuss its work on a performance standard for CBRN respirators. The project is Docket Number 082-A, Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Combination Respirator Unit (CRU).

The agency is working on appropriate standards and test procedures for respiratory protection devices for workers against acts of terrorism. The agency defines a CRU as "a multifunctional unit that employs the technology of two or more different types of respiratory protective devices."

The docket collects public comments about the standard for certifying future CBRN CRU, and the meeting will be held at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport. Information regarding the public meeting may be found at http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2010/2010-26129.htm.

Information submitted to the docket will be considered as NIOSH develops a conceptual standard for the CBRN CRU, as well as updating equipment performance requirements to improve respirator users' safety and health, according to the agency's notice.
