DOL Announces Nearly $628,000 Grant to Assist Maine Workers
The Department of Labor have announced a $627,961 grant to assist approximately 87 workers affected by the sudden closure of Wood Structures Inc. headquartered in Biddeford, Maine, with a manufacturing facility in Saco, Maine.
"The sudden loss of jobs within these communities warrants a response that offers workers opportunities to improve their current skills or pursue new careers in growing regional industries," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.
Wood Structures laid off workers on Dec. 9, 2008, and March 5, 2009. On March 16, the company abruptly ceased operating, resulting in more layoffs. On March 18, company officials issued a public notice announcing Wood Structures' closure, layoffs and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The Maine Department of Labor will receive the grant, which will provide workers with access to dislocated worker services. These services may include individual career counseling, skills assessment, and basic and occupational skills training.
