Double Dose
Orlando welcomes both the XVIIth World Congress on Safety and Health at Work and NSC's 93rd Annual Congress & Expo this month.
How many of the world's safety professionals will beat a path to the Orange County Convention Center this month? And when they arrive, will they be coming for one event or two?
Hosting its 93rd Annual Congress & Expo simultaneously with the XVIIth World Congress on Safety and Health at Work, the National Safety Council is doing its best to involve attendees in both. NSC offered dual registration and prepared an advance program listing major events in common. The council's president and CEO, Alan C. McMillan, touts the pairing as "a unique opportunity for safety and health professionals to learn from and exchange information with their colleagues from other nations." This will be the first time the World Congress will be held in the United States.
There is an added cost to attend both. Members can attend just the 93rd Congress for a fee that has ranged from $375 to $675, depending on date of purchase; the non-member fee ranged from $490 to $875. The combined fee for both events ranged from $775 to $1,000 for professionals and $890 to $1,200 for non-members.
The 93rd Congress begins with seminars Sept. 17-20, then shifts on Wednesday, Sept. 21, to opening ceremonies at 8 a.m. and the expo's opening at 9 a.m. The bulk of the annual conference's activities will take place Sept. 21-23. The World Congress will take place Sept. 18-22, with technical sessions running from Sept. 19-22.
93rd Congress Highlights
McMillan will deliver his annual address during the Opening Session from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The keynoter for that session is Charles O. Holliday Jr., Chairman and CEO of DuPont USA. Both will be discussing international themes and the safety industry's global impact.
The Occupational Keynote at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday is scheduled to feature Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Jonathan L. Snare and David G. Dye, acting assistant secretary of Labor for mine safety and health. Featured speakers at the Motivational Keynote Session (8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday) are Professor E. Scott Geller, Ph.D., of Virginia Tech and Safety Performance Solutions (Blacksburg, Va.) and Charlie Morecraft.

Sessions at this Congress include two at 10-11:30 a.m. and 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday about the Robert W. Campbell Award (also named the International Award for Business Excellence through Safety, Health and Environmental Management). Case studies presented at these will demonstrate how winning companies excel; the award is managed by the council and underwritten by Exxon Mobil Corp.
Several technical sessions will be delivered in Spanish. Topics addressed in the sessions range from fall protection and electric arc injury prevention to OSHA's ergonomic guidelines and construction VPP initiative, computer-based training, workplace violence preparedness, HAZWOPER, maritime hazardous energy control, and teen drivers' safety. U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board Chair Carolyn Merritt's "Investing in Safety" presentation at 10 a.m. Wednesday will examine the costs and impact of one incident to show the value of investing in prevention.
World Congress Highlights
DuPont is the premier sponsor of the World Congress. Sessions for this event are grouped in four themes:
1) Impact of Globalization: Opportunities and Risks
2) Leadership in Safety and Health
3) Challenges in a Changing World of Work
4) Prevention is a Value in a Globalized World
The event includes poster presentations from more than 250 professionals from around the world, with designated times established so visitors can meet the authors, and a Sept. 19-22 international film and multimedia festival on safety and health issues. A National Night Out on Wednesday, Sept. 21, will take World Congress attendees to Disney's MGM Studios park.
Area Attractions & Expo Hours
Family-friendly Orlando boasts some of the world's best-known entertainment options, including the Walt Disney World Resort, Universal's Islands of Adventure, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Discovery Cove, and SeaWorld Orlando. The Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Inc. suggests enjoying Universal CityWalk Orlando and The Comedy Warehouse at Downtown Disney Pleasure Island. If in downtown Orlando, try the Improv Comedy Club & Restaurant and also Thornton Park restaurants such as Hue-A or Dexter's, or visit a club such as Antigua, Latitudes, Sky 60, or The Social, the bureau recommends.
Headquarters hotels this year are the Peabody Orlando Hotel and the Rosen Centre Hotel. Both are adjacent to the convention center and located on opposite sides of busy International Drive. Expo hours are:
