Washington Seeks Public Input on Indoor Heat Rulemaking

The rulemaking will consider heat hazards in every industry, with a preliminary draft expected before more meetings in 2027.

Workers, employers and others concerned about indoor heat can weigh in on a possible Washington rule at six public meetings in November hosted by the state Department of Labor & Industries (L&I).

The agency's Division of Occupational Safety and Health opened the rulemaking Aug. 18. Options under consideration include a temperature trigger or other heat-stress measure, water and cooling, rest breaks, training, planning and emergency response.

Four in-person sessions will run Nov. 3-10 in Tukwila, Ellensburg, Kennewick and Spokane Valley, with virtual meetings Nov. 12 and 19. Meeting details and join information are available from L&I.
