New SCBA Uses Beacon Technology to Help Crews Locate Firefighters

The G1 City Edition weighs up to half a pound less than the previous model in its standard configuration and meets the 2025 NFPA 1970 standard.

Fire crews can use a handheld connected device to locate firefighters wearing MSA Safety's new G1 City Edition self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) when an alarm is activated, according to the manufacturer.

The G1 City Edition SCBA integrates MSA's LUNAR Beacon Technology into its power module. A firefighter carrying a LUNAR Connected Device can receive directional information leading toward a wearer in alarm status.

When paired with the SCBA, the handheld device can display air-pressure information and share the wearer's alarm status and location. MSA said that information can also appear in its FireGrid Monitor application when data or radio connectivity is available.

The standard configuration weighs up to half a pound less than the previous G1 model. The SCBA combines a redesigned cylinder-retention system with a low-profile swiveling lumbar pad, changes that MSA said can help reduce fatigue while improving balance and comfort.

Additional changes include thicker regulator and cylinder-valve controls for use with gloves, thinner shoulder pads, longer adjustment straps and a control-module display showing cylinder pressure and estimated time remaining.

MSA said the G1 City Edition meets the requirements of the 2025 edition of NFPA 1970, the consolidated performance standard covering structural and proximity firefighting equipment.
