OSHA Seeks Applications for Susan Harwood Training Grants

In total, the agency will award more than $12.7 million.

OSHA has announced that more than $12 million will be available through grants to help certain employers provide trainings.

According to a news release, OSHA is awarding more than $12.7 million through the Susan Harwood Training Grant Program for workplace health and safety-related training. Eligible employers include nonprofits, public higher education institutions, “employer associations, labor unions, joint labor/management association [and] Indian tribes,” per OSHA.

This grant will go towards “disadvantaged, underserved, low-income, and other hard-to-reach, at-risk workers and employers," according to the press release.

There are three categories under the grant that employers can apply to: targeted topic training, training and educational materials development and capacity building grants. For targeted topic training, funds go to “supporting educational programs that identify and prevent workplace hazards.” Funds under the training and educational materials development will go to creating training and materials. Under the capacity building, funds will help employers start new training programs.

Applications close on July 7, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Employers who want to apply are required to register at www.grants.gov and the System of Award Management.

The program was founded in 1978 under a different name, New Directions. It was renamed in 1997 after the former Director of the Office of Risk Assessment Susan Harwood, who worked at OSHA for 17 years.
