Drive Safely Work Week 2015 Materials Now Available

This year marks NETS' 19th year producing the campaign during the first full week in October (Oct. 5-9, 2015). The materials are undated and can be used any time during the year.

NETS, the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety, is once again producing Traffic Safety Work Week early next month. This year marks NETS' 19th year producing the campaign during the first full week in October (Oct. 5-9, in this case), but the materials are undated and can be used any time during the year.

NETS makes a "#PlanAhead—Your Key to Driving Safely" toolkit available free of charge. It underscores why advance preparation is important--whether checking the fuel gauge the night before, thinking through your route, arranging for a designated driver, or planning practice sessions with a teen driver, planning ahead is a key element of safe driving, according to the organization.

NETS urges those interested in the campaign and the materials to encourage their friends and colleagues to download and use the materials. Many employers depend on DSWW for their yearly road safety campaigns, and the campaign is an opportunity to reach all employees, not just company drivers, with safe driving outreach, according to NETS, which is a nonprofit.

"Planning is critical to safe driving from many different perspectives," said Joe McKillips, chairperson of NETS and director, Commercial Environment, Health & Safety for the global health care company Abbott. "It can be as simple as planning the best route. Other times it can mean planning for a designated driver, setting aside time with your teen driver to practice, or talking to an older family member about the possibility of limiting their driving. These considerations and more are covered in this year's campaign materials."

The campaign was developed using the expertise of NETS' member companies, which collectively represent a fleet of more than half a million vehicles that travel in excess of 11 billion miles globally each year. According to NETS, the 2015 DSWW campaign's daily areas of emphasis will help employees to:

  • Remember to take time to plan the journey, even those that feel routine
  • Prepare for driving situations that take them into unfamiliar areas
  • Take precautions to ensure they are driving with a clear head
  • Learn to navigate the changes we all experience as we age and how they may affect driving
  • Think through ways to plan ahead for driving situations that involve family members
