Pennsylvania Food Plant Earns OSHA Star

Papetti's Hygrade Egg Products in Klingerstown, Pa., has achieved the highest honor in the agency's VPP.

OSHA has recognized the employees and management at Papetti's Hygrade Egg Products Inc. in Klingerstown, Pa., for demonstrating excellence in their company's safety and health program. The plant has earned Star designation in the agency's Voluntary Protection Programs.

"This company's dedication to ensuring a safe workplace for its employees makes it most deserving of this honor," said Mark Stelmack, OSHA's area director in Wilkes Barre, Pa., who attended a ceremony at the Klingerstown facility this week and presented the company with a plaque and flag. Papetti Hygrade Egg Products Inc., a subsidiary of Michael Foods Inc., manufactures frozen egg products at the plant.

VPP recognizes private and federal work sites with effective safety and health management systems that have maintained injury and illness rates below national Bureau of Labor Statistics averages. Participating sites are exempt from OSHA programmed inspections while they maintain their VPP status; there has been criticism of the programs during 2011 for this exemption because some VPP sites have experienced fatalities without being dropped from VPP.
