Workplace safety programs are rapidly transitioning from standard regulatory compliance measures into core strategic business drivers, according to a recent industry report.
The 2026 EHS 360 Benchmark Report found that 75% of environmental, health and safety (EHS) professionals believe executive leadership now views their department more strategically than they did two years ago. Furthermore, 82% reported gaining influence at the executive level.
The study, compiled by software firm VelocityEHS, surveyed 1,008 EHS professionals and analyzed anonymized industry usage data to highlight growing operational pressures. Safety departments face expanding regulatory frameworks, staffing constraints and budget limitations.
Artificial intelligence has emerged as a primary tool to address these challenges. According to the data, 76% of respondents believe AI can reduce administrative burdens, while 70% trust AI-generated insights to guide safety decisions. Roughly 44% identified automation as the largest force shaping the future of the industry and 34% already report a measurable return on investment from AI tools.
Integration into broader corporate risk discussions is also rising, with 67% of professionals stating EHS is now included in enterprise-level strategy sessions. However, fundamental goals remain a priority, as 53% noted that developing a company-wide safety program remains their primary focus.
The findings indicate that organizations adopting integrated technologies and AI-enabled workflows are shifting from reactive hazard response toward predictive prevention.
