FEMA Gives a $28 Million Grant to Region 6
The region receives the donation to develop and implement safer procedures at fire department training facilities
According to a press release from FEMA, states in Region 6 (Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma) have received a $28 million preparedness grant. A group of 180 fire departments, EMS agencies and state training facilities for fire departments will be sharing the grant.
The $28 million is funded by the 2012 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG). It will fund equipment, vehicles, wellness and fitness programs, facility modification, fire prevention projects, personal protective equipment and hiring, recruitment and retention of firefighters. The funding falls into three specific categories: Assistance to Firefighters (AFG), Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants (SAFER) and Fire Prevention and Safety Grants (FP&S).
The AFG awards gear to improve the ability of entities to protect the public and fire service personnel from fire and related hazards.
