Hazmat Robot: Safety of the Future

PETMAN is a robot that could handle hazardous materials.

Get acquainted with the hazmat specialist of the future: a robot named PETMAN.

Boston Dynamics has created a robot with a gas mask and hazmat suit that has a wide range of motion and a human-like frame. Build in part with funding from the Department of Defense, this hazmat soldier could be a glimpse into the future of warfare. However, for those who commonly deal with hazardous materials, this could be an important step toward employee safety.

With a gas mask and a chemical protection suit over its metal frame, PETMAN even has sensors to determine when a chemical is leaking into the suit. It even simulated human physiology by simulating sweat and controlling the temperature.

A video of PETMAN's capabilities can be viewed on YouTube.
