Among other things, it would require plant operators to maintain resources and procedures to cool a reactor's core and spent fuel pool, as well as preserve the reactor's containment, following an event that disables all a/c electrical power sources at a site.
It will examine the circumstances surrounding violence aimed at these responders and their effects on personnel, look at technological and operational ways to prevent violent workplace/on-duty incidents, determine ways to mitigate these incidents, and give examples of current best practices.
"Our study showed that WUI fires also are distinct from either urban or wildland fires alone. We provide strong evidence that defensive measures designed specifically for the wildland urban interface and administered early can significantly reduce destruction and damage," said NIST fire researcher and principal investigator Alexander Maranghides.
The money will provide temporary employment on projects that help with cleanup, demolition, repair, renovation, and reconstruction of destroyed public structures.
