New York City Sees Drop in Workplace Construction Site Injuries

New York City’s Local Law 196 helped set a significant drop in construction injuries into motion.

The New York City Department of Buildings announced that it had issued a record 100,000 Site Safety Training cards as of October 29, according to Construction Dive.

The distribution of Safety Training cards was mandated through New York City legislation in 2017. The practice of safety training has resulted in a 20% decrease in workplace injuries, which is the first reduction the city has experienced in about a decade.

The success of the training program inspired the creation of the Construction Site Safety Reimbursement Program, a grant that will help offset the cost of training for construction companies that employ up to 15 workers.

The grant is a one-time payment that will cover training such as OSHA 10, OSHA 30 and any Site Safety Training.
