OSHA Releases 2023 Workplace Injury, Illness Data

The data requirements were updated in July 2023.

OSHA has unveiled comprehensive workplace injury and illness statistics for 2023. This release marks the inaugural dataset under the newly established Improve Tracking of Workplace Injuries and Illnesses regulation that took effect in July of last year.

According to a recent release, the data includes detailed reports from over 375,000 establishments, which includes OSHA Form 300A Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses. The data set also includes detailed accounts of individual injuries and illnesses for companies with 100 or more employees within high-risk industries.

Moreover, OSHA disclosed partial figures from over 850,000 instances documented on OSHA Form 300 and Form 301, which track individual workplace injuries and illnesses in further detail. This is part of a broader strategy to make such information accessible, aiding in the identification and mitigation of workplace hazards and unsafe conditions.

These efforts are expected to enhance research on the prevention, occurrence and management of workplace hazards and associated health issues. By pinpointing dangerous conditions, strategies can be developed to control or eliminate risks, ultimately reducing the prevalence of work-related injuries and illnesses.

OSHA has also been proactive in educating employers about their reporting responsibilities and currently reviews the collected data to omit any personally identifiable information before making additional records available to the public.
