California Hospital Wins Health Care Baldrige Award

Sutter Davis Hospital's accomplishments include no post-operative orthopedic surgical infections from 2008 through 2012, no catheter-associated urinary tract infections since 2008, and no central-line-associated bloodstream infections since 2010.

U.S. Commerce Department Secretary Penny Pritzker presented a 2013 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award this week to officials from Sutter Davis Hospital, a nonprofit, 48-bed acute care hospital located in Davis, Calif. It was chosen as the winner in the health care category; the Baldrige Award honors organizational innovation and performance excellence.

The hospital has 385 employees and 394 medical staff members who are supported by 100 volunteers, according to the Commerce announcement, which says SDH since 2010 has ranked in the top 10 percent nationally for core measure scores reported to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services -- including results for acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and pneumonia. And SDH is in the top 10 percent nationally for post-operative orthopedic surgical infections rates, "with no infections from 2008 through 2012. The hospital has experienced zero catheter-associated urinary tract infections since 2008 and zero central-line-associated bloodstream infections events since 2010. No adverse events involving incompatible blood have occurred since 2008,” it states.

SDH's average door-to-doctor time in emergency has improved from 45 minutes in 2008 to 22 minutes in 2012, below the California benchmark of 58 minutes, and employee satisfaction and engagement scores, as well as employees’ perceptions of safety, exceed the top 10 percent of marks in a national survey database and national 10 percent benchmarks, respectively, according to the announcement.
