Falls from heights remain the most frequently cited serious workplace safety violation in Washington state, according to the Department of Labor & Industries, which has fined roofing companies more than $1.4 million in recent months for failing to protect workers.
L&I said five construction companies were cited over the past four months for violations involving workers operating at heights above four feet without proper fall protection, including harnesses, fall arrest systems, or adequately installed anchors.
Roof Doctor Inc. of Olympia received multiple citations in December totaling nearly $193,000 for repeat and willful serious violations after inspectors observed roofers working without fall protection at job sites in Olympia and Tumwater. The company is appealing fines.
Asset Roofing Company LLC was fined nearly $720,000 across four inspections in September for repeat and willful serious violations related to fall protection, ladder use, and training deficiencies at job sites across Snohomish County. The company is appealing all citations.
Other companies cited include Valentine Roofing, DaBella, and Modern S Construction LLC, with penalties ranging from about $135,000 to more than $258,000. Most of the firms are part of L&I’s Severe Violators Enforcement Program, which subjects employers to increased inspections.
State officials said falls are preventable and emphasized that employers are responsible for ensuring workers use proper fall protection when working at height.
