Beyond Water, Rest, and Shade: Measuring Cognition in the Heat

Most heat safety program measurements rely on either the environment or the body: heat index, temperature, hydration, or heart rate. Almost none measure the variable that fails first, cognition. Heat degrades attention, judgment, and decision-making before core temperature ever spikes, and long before a worker feels unwell. Read the narrative of most heat incidents and a bad decision sits early in the timeline, before any recordable injury, yet no conventional program tracks it. In this session, Dr. Douglas Casa of the Korey Stringer Institute and Randall Arms of Epicore Biosystems pair the science with the field. Dr. Casa brings decades of research on exertional heat illness, hydration, and preventing heat-related harm across sport, the military, and industry. Randall brings a practitioner's view of what heat safety looks like when production pressure meets high-risk, non-routine work. Together they make the case that cognition is the missing metric in occupational heat safety: when judgment starts to slip, why individual variation means group thresholds miss the workers most at risk, and what safety leaders can measure on the worker today to close the gap between compliance and protection. Attendees will leave with a practical way to treat cognition as a leading indicator, not a post-incident explanation.

AI in Safety: Practical Applications, Emerging Trends and What’s Next

Technology is rapidly transforming the way safety professionals identify risks, analyze data and make informed decisions. As AI tools become more accessible, understanding how to use them effectively — and responsibly — is becoming an essential skill for today’s safety leaders.

The Hidden Risks in Your Hearing Conservation Program and How to Fix Them

A strong hearing testing program prevents noise-induced hearing loss and keeps you OSHA compliant, but many programs are undermined by a set of common, hard-to-spot pitfalls. The result is low participation, wasted spend, and program inefficiencies that create compliance exposure without realizing it.

Stop Doing Safety For Them: Redistributing Ownership Before It Breaks Your Program (and Your People)

This session explores the challenges EHS professionals face when safety is treated as the responsibility of one department rather than a shared organizational responsibility. Attendees will learn how a distributed accountability framework can empower leaders, supervisors, and workers to own safety while allowing EHS teams to focus on system design, coaching, and maintaining standards.

Working Safely Around High-Voltage Utility Systems

This session explores common electrical hazards faced by workers who work near overhead power lines, underground cables, and energized utility systems. Attendees will learn practical strategies for preventing incidents, working safely with utilities, and responding effectively when equipment contacts an energized power line.
