Schedule Time to Talk to Employees During National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-By Incidents

In 2021, 150 people in the construction injury died from struck-by incidents, according to the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR). Though this is the lowest this number has been in 10 years, taking steps to prevent these incidents and fatalities is essential to keeping workers safe.
In its fourth year, the National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-By Incidents in construction, running from April 17 to 21, 2023, is a time for employers to discuss struck-by hazards with their workers and how these incidents can be prevented. The event is hosted by the NORA Construction Sector Council.
During a stand-down, employers and workers take a break from work to review a topic. Per the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the focuses of this year’s stand-down are “highway work zones, vehicular and heavy equipment hazards, dropped objects, dump trucks, and vehicle recovery.”
There are numerous resources available including a presentation, toolbox talks—available in English and Spanish—infographics and webinars. The webinars cover dropped objects, work zones and lifting, heavy equipment and cranes. In addition, last year’s webinars are still available for viewing.
Collaborating with National Work Zone Awareness Week, this event involved work from many organizations, including NIOSH, the NORA Construction Sector Council, National Construction Center, OSHA and CPWR.
