Roofer Fined After Teen Worker’s Death on Job Site

Troyer Roofing & Coatings to pay $290K in federal penalties, criminal fines.

A Jamesport roofing contractor has agreed to pay $290,000 in penalties and fines after a federal investigation found multiple violations following the fatal fall of a teen worker in March 2023.

The U.S. Department of Labor said John Troyer, owner of Troyer Construction LLP (doing business as Troyer Roofing & Coatings), failed to provide required fall protection, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. A separate probe by the Wage and Hour Division found Troyer illegally employed minors in roofing work from May 2022 to June 2023.

Under the settlement, Troyer will pay $156,259 in OSHA penalties, $15,000 in child labor fines, and $118,741 in criminal penalties to the U.S. Department of Justice. The company will also join Missouri’s On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program.
